1) California

In 2014 California installed an impressive 4,316MW of solar power, more than ten times the amount of any other state. Even more impressively, they installed more solar in one year than the entire United States between 1970 and 2011. California is expected to become a global leader in solar power by the end of 2015 outpacing leading countries such as China, Italy and Germany in solar power. In 2014 alone solar was installed in over one million homes, and created 54,700 jobs. Broken down by population, California currently has a 262 watt per person average.

2) North Carolina

By the end of 2014 North Carolina installed solar on 43,000 homes, with 396.6MW of power, and created 5,600 new jobs. North Carolina has installed more solar than all of the South Eastern states combined, and has an average watt per person average of 98 watts. The growing demand for solar in North Carolina is also tied into their generous tax credit that can be issued on both the state and federal level.

3) Nevada

With 308.2MW of solar energy installations, Nevada has become a leader in solar jobs per capita, creating almost 6,000 jobs in 2014 alone. With 52,000 home installations it comes as no surprise that the job market for solar is in high demand. Nevada is also the second state to have built a solar power plant (Nevada Solar One), with power up to 74MW Solar One offsets the equivalent of 20,000 cars CO2.

4) Massachusetts

Solar will replace 900MW of fossil fuels with 1,100MW of solar. In 2014 on over 50,000 homes, Massachusetts installed 308.2MW of solar. Impressively, the solar industry has also created 9,400 solar energy jobs second only to California in job creation. Massachusetts has set a goal of 1.6GW of solar installations by the end of 2020.

5) Arizona

With 246.6MW installed on over 35,000 homes Arizona is another industry leader in job creation in the solar industry, boasting over 9,200 new jobs. Arizona is one of four states that had 100% of their new utility-scale electric generating capacity installed using solar energy. Being one of the sunniest states in the United States it is no surprise that Arizona has seen rapid growth in solar installations over the last four years.

6) New Jersey

With 7,200 jobs created and 239.8MW of power installed, over 38,000 homeowners in New Jersey now have solar systems installed on their homes. With an impressive 8,000 installations, New Jersey set a new state record for solar installations. Furthermore, New Jersey is one of three states that has over 1GW of solar power installed.

7) New York

At 147.4MW, New York installed as much solar in 2014 as the previous three years combined. This boast in installations spawned 7,280 new jobs, the workers of which installed on over 14,000 homes. With innovative new technologies such as the MV100, a solar powered food cart, New York is experimenting with more renewable energy alternatives today than ever before. 8) Texas

Perhaps one of the more surprising states on this list, Texas installed 128.9MW of power and expects to double that amount by the end of 2015. Texas installed solar on over 16,000 homes. Due to the rising costs of electricity and their growing economy, Texas's renewable energy alternatives is expected to keep growing well into the future.

9) Hawaii

Hawaii is the industry leader in watts per person at 321 watts. In 2014 Hawaii installed 106.9MW on over 16,000 homes. In fact, nearly one in every eight homes have solar systems installed. Due to the high cost of importing energy to the Hawaiian island, solar is expected to grow. Not only does solar offer the citizens of Hawaii with a clean energy alternative, it is saving them money and yielding high ROIs in the process.

10) New Mexico

Last but certainly not least, New Mexico doubled their installs from 2013 with 88.2MW on over 20,000 homes. New Mexico has 156 watts per person, and that number is expected to grow by the end of 2015. With 93 solar installation companies, New Mexico's work force is expected to increase in the solar industry as demand for home solar systems increases.
